Class of 2020

I chose my major because I want to work with Exotic Animals after I become a veterinarian. I would love to go to Michigan State Vet School. I want to be able to travel around the world and take care of animals and take pictures of them too and a major of Zoology definitely gives me a good feeling.

My favorite Part of Briggs is most definitely the people. Whether that be my fellow peers, my residents, the staff, the professors, or the RHS staff/RA, ICA, ACD, CDs. The people of the Lyman Briggs or of Holmes Hall are some of the best people that I have met in my life. Due to the small classes in Lyman Briggs, you get to know everyone at a closer level. You see familiar faces every day and everyone is willing to help out in one way or another.

The Summer of 2018, I traveled to Kenya to study Behavioral Ecology in African mammals. This was a phenomenal experience, some of the people that I met on this trip are, whom I consider to be, really good friends. Being in a foreign land where I could study something that I am interested in was fantastic. Observing these animals in an environment that I was not familiar with was very intriguing. The animals by themselves made the trip for me but being able to go study these animals and take pictures and videos just had me in absolute bliss. I like to travel, and this was my first time to Africa, so this had a huge personal importance to me.

My advice to incoming students is do not be afraid of anything! Try anything and everything. This is your college experience, this is the prime time for you to make mistakes with consequences that aren’t as severe as if you did them in the “real world”. Its ok to try new things, meet new people, try new food, and put yourself out there. There is going to be a day when you look back on your life and you’re going to reflect on your college days, and there may be things that you wish you did. Try to reduce that as much as you can. Be smart and be safe and be willing to try new things. If you are afraid of doing something because you feel like you would look silly, to that I say:  everyone when they first try something look silly. Being bad at something is the first step for being good at something, college is about growth and development. Learning what you like and do not like doing but you won’t find out about any of that if you are not going to put yourself out there. You never know what kind of experiences you will gain over your time here.  Even if the experience is not the best, it is a learning experience and you know what not to do for next time!
